We know what a big decision choosing a high school can be, and we want to help you make the best choice possible. The Shadow Program at South High School offers prospective students the opportunity to spend a morning going to class with South students to get a feel of what South is really all about. Shadowing is an excellent opportunity for students to ask questions about classes, specific programs, extracurricular activities and athletics here at South.
The Shadow Program runs from September 14th through February 26th. There are no shadow days in December due to final exams and winter break.
Shadow Days at South are on Monday and Fridays and only 10 students per day are scheduled. Please be aware that there are some time periods, such as CSAP, and AP testing times, that shadows are not allowed.
To Schedule a day for your child to shadow:
• Call 720–423‐6001 and leave a message including:
o Your child’s name and current school
o Your name and phone number
o At least 3 dates you are interested in shadowing
• A South representative will return your call within 48 hours with the scheduled date
What to plan for the day your child shadows:
• Arrive at the Main Office at 8:15 am; be back at South by 12:15 to pick up your child in the foyer or another prearranged location by you and your child.
• Both a staff member as well as a South Student Ambassador will meet both student and parent. After the initial answering of questions as well as being given written information about South High School, the student guest and Ambassador will go on a tour of the school and then return to class.
• The student guest has the opportunity to shadow through 2 or 3 class periods. All of our Ambassadors have full, challenging class schedules which include Honors and/or AP classes as part of their daily routine. While we understand that most parents are interested in their child seeing the Honors or AP classes please be aware that our Ambassadors are on a block schedule and that they may or may not have an advanced class on the day and period the student guest is visiting. Nevertheless, our Ambassadors will answer questions about all classes from the unique perspective of a current student.
Choosing South for your High School
• 1st Round Choice “Decision Time” for DPS is January. If you live outside of South’s home boundaries you will need to complete a School of Choice Form. • Second Round Choice is February through August.
